About Development Frontiers
Ten years of standing with rural communities.
We are a Ghanaian NGO working at the frontier of climate, livelihoods and social justice in the north of the country.
Our Story
From a local idea to a growing family of organizations.
Development Frontiers (DF) was incorporated on 31 October 2014 to promote local economic development, environmental sustainability and social justice in Northern Ghana through the principles of Just Transitions.
We began where the need was clearest: with smallholder farmers whose harvests were becoming harder to predict, and with women whose labour held rural economies together but who had the least say in them. Our answer was to build capability inside communities rather than deliver services from outside.
Over the years DF successfully incubated the Development Frontiers Women Cooperative (DFWC), which has since evolved into an independent cooperative organization owned by the women who were once beneficiaries of our interventions. It remains the clearest proof of how we measure success: by what communities can carry on without us.

Milestones along the way
2014
DF is founded
Incorporated on 31 October 2014 in Tamale to advance local economic development and social justice.
2016
Rooted in the field
Early programmes take shape with farming households, focused on climate-resilient practices and food security.
2019
DFWC is incubated
Women beneficiaries organise into the Development Frontiers Women Cooperative under DF's guidance.
Today
An independent cooperative
DFWC stands on its own, while DF grows a family of community-owned organizations across the north.

A fair shift to climate-resilient livelihoods, where the people most exposed to climate risk are the ones shaping the response.
We start by listening
Every intervention begins with participatory research: community mapping, household conversations and validation sessions where residents confirm, correct and prioritise what we heard before a single activity is planned.
We build local capability, not dependency
Training, cooperatives and local structures are designed so that skills and assets stay in the community. DFWC becoming an independent cooperative is the model we aim to repeat.
We centre women and youth
Gender Equality and Social Inclusion is not a component of our work, it is the lens across all of it, from who attends a training to who controls the income it generates.
We connect the field to policy
Evidence gathered with communities is carried into district and national dialogue, so that rural realities shape the decisions made about them.
